The Daily Star is reporting that ambitious Swindon have emerged as the leading suitor although Championship side Middlesbrough are also in the hunt for his signature.
Middlesbrough already have fellow Socceroos players Rhys Williams and Scott McDonald on their books.
Former Premier League star Di Canio took over at Swindon in 2011, leading them to the League Two title last season. He reportedly could be offered significant funds to further boost his squad in the next few weeks.
Swindon are on the third line of betting for the title behind Sheffield United and MK Dons. The season starts on August 18.
